Thats the best way.  Like all of the other projects hosted on the
blender site, if you want cvs access to a project the best way is to
start submitting code updates.  After you've done a number of them ask
for access to the cvs tree and more than likely you'll be in.
Alternately if your just looking for the code you can also download it from:
http://www.yafray.org/index.php?s=2&PHPSESSID=d2d496c3b3d17c4665a9d67fd0b74ea6

or get a daily checkout from:
http://download.blender.org/projects/yafray/daily-checkouts/

cvs is the best way though if your going to develop because then you can
use things like cvs update and cvs diff to keep your patches upto date.
