[AUCTeX] installation problems for 24.2

I've recently upgraded to 24.2 from Damien Cassou's Ubuntu ppa, and
easy installation methods for auctex no longer work.

1. Installing the auctex .deb package : doesn't think emacs24 is a
   legitimate flavour. This is probably being fixed by Debian / Ubuntu
   (I saw bug reports).

2. Installing from ELPA gave me an error; last few lines from *Messages*
   shown below. Does anyone know if this looks like a problem with my
   setup or with the package? I'm running Lubuntu 12.04 (64bit).

I finally set it up in $HOME/emacs.d and am using "load auctex.el" as
suggested in INSTALL. Auctex itself is working fine (I think).
