Thanks for the hint. No, this was not in the load-path. I eventually
moved all my emacs related files / directories to a different location,
and tried this with a clean slate.

Now I get the expected behaviour that you described earlier. So the
problem is indeed with my .emacs.el and .emacs.d. I'll just have to dig
around to figure out where the problem is.
