I'm not even sure it *is* a bug in the compiler. I think the bug is
in your (original) code.
You'd probably be better by asking this in the comp.lang.c newsgroup,
that's where the resident C standard gurus are lurking. If they agree
it is a bug in the compiler (then they'll typically also quote you the
respective part of the C standard), open a bug report for GCC.
