Joseph pointed out that we want to stitch in the pre-sourceware
CVS history, which is available:

There are a few candidates for merging this in:

1. Whatever mysterious process Ian refers to in that email;
2. reposurgeon
3. git stitch-repo
4. git grafts plus git filter-branch
