Thank Ariel and Antonio you for the detailed replies.
It worked very well indeed, and I was able to get back most of the data.
The main problem files were big Thunderbird email files. Since these are
plain text files, it was easy afterwards to recover the mails.
ddrescue is definitely a great program!
The problem which I couldn't solve is that I seem to have no control
over the low level retries and/or timeout from the ntfs or disk driver.
Apparently, this out of the realm of ddrescue, but I have not found a
way to tweak the OS or some module to let it abandon unreadable blocks
faster.
