Dear all, there's a quite user-friendly explanation on how to find out the serial number of a drive (which helps to confirm that a certain device is a certain hard disk) by the German hosting company Hetzner: http://wiki.hetzner.de/index.php/Seriennummern_von_Festplatten_und_Hinweise_ zu_defekten_Festplatten/en It's also available in German and Russian (?) language. The output of smartctl is explained nicely as well further below in the guide. While the guide does not literally address the "am I specifying the correct drive to ddrescue"-question it could be a good place to point less experienced users to. Kind Regards Felix
