Yes, I faced a situation where I couldn't not access the computer
running ddrescue but still would like to be informed about its progress.
E.g. you go on vacation and have ddrescue running at home/work for
several weeks...

True, the mail stuff should not be part of ddrescue. All we need to add
is some sort of "hooks" that will fire up external script/command on
certain events (like every N days/hours/weeks or every M% recovered).
This way we can send emails/sms/whatsoever and it will be up to user to
configure his environment so that the notifications will be delivered
properly. ddrescue's code will not be overloaded...
