I agree with you. It would be much better if Rmail didn't move mail
away from /var/spool/mail. However, what to do about the file locking
problem?
I have no clear ideas. What do other mail readers do?
And maybe Emacs wouldn't need locking. It is capable to detect that a
file it is visitng has changed. Maybe a mail reader in Emacs could just
prevent the user from overwriting a changed mailbox.
But I am not aware of all the implications, nor do I have a vast
knowledge of mail readers. I'm just saying that, as far as I have been
told, there are better players around, and there have been for a long
time, so rmail is behind the times, and it needs not to be.
