Follow-up Comment #1:

I think this is probably a libtool/automake bug.

If you can work around it, then I'm reluctant to spend too much time looking
into this.  I'm really hoping that in the near future we can finish migrating
to GtkBuilder, and remove this dynamically loaded library altogether.
