Follow-up Comment #5, bug #43029 (project pspp):

I agree, this is a problem with automake. In order to track the workaround
patch in the pspp debian package I opened a bug in the pspp debian package
with a reference to the reports here and in automake. The bug report is here:

So this should be closed here.
