I asked Roland about this yesterday; no response yet. He had
suggested that the casts from malloc were needed for C++ compilers
masquerading as C compilers. But glibc itself contains many uses of
malloc without the cast. So I'm not quite sure what the glibc policy
is right now.
Once I find out, though, and assuming they don't really need to
support compilers incompatible with C89, I'm willing to champion the
changes back into glibc.
