I installed tar-1.14.90 and I still receive the same error when trying to untar a bziped tarfile:

>gnutar -tjvf humboldt_inc_proc_sm_work_20040914.tar.bz2
gnutar: Unaligned block (5000 bytes) in archive
gnutar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

>gnutar --version                                      
tar (tar) 1.14.90
