If backwards compatibility is no longer an issue for GNU tar, wouln't
it then be a good idea to also drop the non-POSIX compliant old "GNU tar"
archive format that has been introduced 1989 in favor of a format that
is at least POSIX.1-1988 compliant?
An important step could be to make the POSIX.1-1988 tar archive
format the default and to avoid creating archives with compatibility
issues by default.
