Does it mean that if there is a complex @caption and no @shortcaption 
@listoffloat will fail with a mysterious error? In that case this should be
stated more firmly in the doc 

instead of 
   Thus you can write a long caption for the main ...
it could be
   Thus if you write a long caption for the main document you should also 
   give a short title with @shortcaption to appear in the list of floats.
