[Chicken-users] stripping accents

Just to make sure, to prevent duplication of effort: is there an easy
way to strip accents from unicode characters with Chicken?
For example, ï should become i, å should become a.

Failing that, is there an easy way to translate characterns similar to
unix tr or sed's y/// expression?
