That works; I did automake, then ./configure, then make 
BOOTSTRAP_PATH=/usr/local/bin,
and crashed with:

make[1]: *** No rule to make target `library.exports', needed by `all-am'.  
Stop.
make[1]: Leaving directory `/opt/chicken'
make: *** [all] Error 2
