Thanks to Vadim (another Red Hatter), yesterday I heard about jdiff:

This is another Java API comparison program. While I don't think it
can replace japi for our purposes, I think it would make a useful
addition to our release process. That is, we could run jdiff and get
a nice set of pages describing exactly what changed.
