GNUstep in general is very slow at scrolling. There are various optimisations that made a huge performance improvement on '90s hardware and make things a lot slower now.

GNUstep's text rendering also leaves something to be desired. It uses the Cairo 'toy' interface, which is intended for simple demos, and not the interface that connects to things like Harfbuzz. I would love to see someone spend some time on this...
