There's a long history between Apple, GCC, and the GPL.
So, yes, Apple's investment into LLVM was specifically to avoid the GPL.
But LLVM (and surrounding tools) exists independently from Apple.

Indeed. By avoiding LLVM/Clang/... we're just harming
ourselves, AFAICT.
