I've already weighed in on this, back when
themove to use the minibuffer for reading 
almost everything was first introduced.
Just repeating here for the record, that I
too concur.

Reading a char in the minibuffer is an
obstacle, not an aid.

Same with Isearch; it should never have
been changed to use the minibuffer instead
of the echo area.

(At least we have non-option defvar
`y-or-n-p-use-read-key'...)
