I'm not sure about this ... the search widget seems to be meant like a rather 
independent tool (like e.g. a mount-manager oder an advanced  rename tool). Or 
think of it as a Ctrl-O subshell of midnight commander. Any subshell cd would 
not change the pwd of mc.

If F9 wasn't meant as independent tool, but as context tool working only on the 
present working directory (pwd), then one would normally not change the search 
folder in that widget at all. I mean, you just chose this folder, why suddenly 
another ? Logically, you had to change the pwd from the main window, navigating 
to another place, then hit F9 again.  But this is tedious, so you can chose a 
filder directly. (Similar to Windows Explorer maybe.)
Apparantly the option is there to shorten this workflow, in case you could not 
find the desired file on first try. It really boils down to an independent 
search tool, not a pwd context thing.

So, why should F9 modify the base folder in the first place ? If this were 
implemented, wouldn't it cuase confusion to some other suers who in turn will 
complain that gcmd F9 modifies the base path instead of leaving it alone ... ?


Perhaps you can come up with some usage cases where your "desired behaviour" is 
really the better solution ?
