Bonnie,
Many years ago (ugh, it's more than 10 now) i hacked a little script which
extracts the dependencies from gnome-commander binary. Dunno if it works for
you, an anyway you need a binary installed ...
The script works for Debian, and makes use of the fact that for every installed
packages, Debian puts a rudimentary documentation into /usr/share/doc. Not sure
if Ubuntu does it the same way. Maybe you can adapt things.
It spits out missing development libs marked as NO DEV. You still need to
search for the related package name in the software repository manager.
The script does not need to be executed; sourcing is enough. Just put it into
/tmp and do 'source checdep <path-to-binary>' from a shell.
