gnu tar on Solaris 6 machine

Hello,

I am having trouble getting gnu tar to tar data to a tape.  I have no
problems if I am taring to disk (ex: tar cvf home.tar /home) but if I try to
tar to a tape (ex: tar cvf /dev/rmt/0 /home) I can see the output going to
the screen and some tape activity but nothing is sent to tape.  If I run the
naitive version of tar that came with Solaris, I have no problem taring to
tape.  I am currently using Solaris tar to do full backups on a couple of
NFS directories but would like to switch over to gnu tar because Solairs tar
does not support incremental back-ups or verifies data.  Does anyone know
what may be causing this problem?
