Other than things that have already been discussed, all I can suggest is
the -B flag which forces things to be remade even if they aren't
out-of-date.

This should solve the problem; however, this is not automatic so you'd
have to remember to do it.  In that sense, it might not be better than
just running "make clean" or whatever.
