Libtool is doing much better now under MinGW:

====================================
8 of 99 tests failed
(9 tests were not run)
Please report to address@hidden
====================================

It seems that this problem is to blame for several failures:

/bin/sh ./libtool --mode=link --tag=CC gcc -g -O2 -o mdemo.exe -export-dynamic main.o ./../../libltdl/libltdlc.la libsub.la "-dlopen" self "-dlopen" foo1.la "-dlopen" libfoo2.la
rm -f .libs/mdemo.exe.nm .libs/mdemo.exe.nmS .libs/mdemo.exe.nmT
libtool: link: creating .libs/mdemo.exeS.c
libtool: link: generating symbol list for `mdemo.exe'
libtool: link: extracting global C symbols from `main.o'
/bin/sed: -e expression #2, char 3: Extra characters after command

Dialog boxes pop up several times indicating that ld.exe has crashed and asking if I want to send the details to Microsoft so they can help debug GNU tools.
