with current cvs autotools, and seem to encounter some of the issues
mentioned. (removed all files mentioned in .cvsignore, and those
not recognised in the cvs update)

bootstrap output attached..

Can you show again with "/bin/sh -vx ./bootstrap" please?

What versions of Autoconf and Automake are you using?

What architecture are you running this on?  (config.guess)

While we are all scrambling towards another alpha, Libtool HEAD is
currently not well-tested with CVS autotools.  You might have more
luck bootstrapping it with release tools for the moment...
