Regarding comment #11: no.  I am aware that you are trying to cure a  
problem recurring frequently, but this is an extensive change, and I won't  
introduce it into 2.16 before it has seen any real-life testing exposure,  
namely sufficiently long after releasing 2.17.0.  Since 2.16.0 and 2.17.0  
will likely be released quite closely, this fix does not belong in 2.16.0.   
It's a candidate for cherry-picking into 2.16 when it has been released in  
a development release and sufficient time has passed without problem.   
Given some expected stability for 2.16, it may not be a must-have even  
then, unless 2.17 is unstable to a degree that we want to backport features  
rather than wait for 2.18.
