Given that the broken spanner is not conceptually attached to any note, it  
should not have a post-event type, so a separate music type seems warranted.

A conceivable implementation would be a BrokenSpanner music expression  
containing the spanner itself.  Options for where to put it would be:
Spanner music expression is stored in element
Spanner music expression is stored in a one-element list in elements or  
articulations

Copying span-direction to the BrokenSpanner expression itself would seem of  
dubious value since BrokenSpanner does not occur in pairs.

This form would be reasonably straightforward to generate and recognize  
(also making display-lily-music simple).  Whether this form would also aid  
the implementation itself, I don't know.  But I should think that a  
possible overhead for interpreting this form would be offset by the  
convenience of manipulating it.
