It would seem that Cairo prefers moving stems to pixel positions where they can be stroken without reverting to grey. At any rate, since the stems are now stroken only once instead of twice (and since Cairo thickens stems when stroked multiple times), the resulting look is decidedly lighter. It is nicely coherent, though. I think people will like those previews.
