I opt for a _secure_ behavior: never delete an original file unless really  
asked for.

"nil" as default seems a little bit complicated since you'd have to  
initialize the first numbered backup with "t" or rename the first backup to  
exactly the form recognized by emacs - and who wants to make the cumbersome  
typing in a command line even more cumbersome!

what about storing the users preference(s) in a system variable?
