LYNX-DEV Problems with latest autoconf fileset and HP-UX 9 (snake3 target)

Something must be strange with the configure script that's making 
DIR not get defined under HP-UX 9.  It doesn't happen on Linux, NetBSD, 
or Solaris as far as I can tell.  It also worked on 2.7wb+ct.

I get this when trying to build on HP-UX 9.x with the snake3 target:

        cc -c -o ../../Library/snake/HTFile.o -O -DDEBUG -Ae -DDIRED_SUPPORT 
-DLONG_LIST  -DEXP_CHARTRANS   -I../../Library/Implementation/ -DXMOSAIC_HACK

I'm not sure why; I'll look around to see if I can find the problem, but
I suspect the folks doing the configure work probably know what the
problem is.
