yes -as I said, we hit this case before, once - that's one of the weaknesses
of compiling with gcc, that it has so many extensions to allow non-useful
differences from ANSI or K&R C. I pick out a lot by eye, but overlooked the
hidden assignment in FREE() when I was tidying up.
