Follow-up Comment #1:

Using a recent development tip the test file no longer produces a segmentation
fault.  Octave can't read the MAT-file with an embedded handle to a
subfunction, but just issues an error message about that.  I am changing the
Item Group to Matlab Compatibility and marking this as confirmed.
