Follow-up Comment #27:

I checked in a change
(https://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/0214d9dabba2) which modifies the
tests in debug.cc to use __octave_link_gui_preference__ to stop opening a file
during the testing.  This was preferable to adding the code to test.m because
it really, really slowed down the execution of BIST tests for which this was
never an issue.
