I think that is happening because the signal that sends the workspace to the
GUI is only sent when the prompt is issued and the workspace has changed.  I
suppose we need to also send it when the widget is first created.

There are other issues with signals only being sent when the command line
prompt and not when other user interactions occur, for example by pressing a
button or interacting with some GUI dialog.
