Follow-up Comment #14, bug #63548 (project octave):

I know there were a recently patched, rather severe bug with files being
blanked during crash. Part of that was due to the gui previously not buffering
the save (write a temp file, verify success, then overwrite old file ), which
was colliding with a bug in the new 'trim whitespace' feature. 

Is the current 'open as readonly' feature perhaps tied to being overly
conservative about data loss?
