ok, if not consensus, then the result of inertia :)

maybe something good to add to the short(?) projects wiki list.

in any case, mean can still try to workaround the problem in m-code at least
for single. we can leave double as a to-do until we have a native quadruple
precision type or something happens in bug #61143 to address it direcetly in
sum.
