No, no. You are quite correct in your initial assumptions.
Bootstrap is there to regenerate some of the files that should be up to date
with distro. I'll try to track down what may have happened here - sorry for the
confusion.

Yes, that did seem to fix it.
Is 'bootstrap' supposed to be the first step to building, after unpacking the
tarball or checking out from the git repo? Did I misunderstand by thinking
that ./configure was the usual starting point?
