I think your task is almost solved, see for example the exrdisplay
contained within OpenEXR.
However, OpenGL (or DirectX) + Cg + OpenEXR is the right way to go.
This may give you a starting point:
(1) http://nehe.gamedev.net
(3) http://www.cgshaders.org
and the examples contained with Nvidia SDK and teh "shadered" exrdisplay.
FX5200 is more than sufficient.
