My proprietary commercial project uses it. From my experience Autotools
help keep the build scipts clean. Also you can easily find many examples
of how to implement something with Autotools and such a knowledge base
usually does not exist for a home-grown build system. Autotools also cut
down the training and adaptation time --- would you hire a developer who
cannot build autoconfiscated package?

AFAICT Autotools are not best suited for releasing binary packages, but I
would not say that this is a limitation.

I use Autotools only on *NIX, I would expect that the view is different
when you look through the Windows.
