I'm certainly not opposed to the idea (albeit I don't see that as an
important endeavor, the size and importance of Ralf's contributions
being absolutely clear from the git history and mailing list archives);
but I think keeping this "historical archive" in the Automake repository
proper is confusing and effort-wasting.

Maybe we could create a parent-less commit in the Automake git repo,
copy the 'automake-history.texi' manual there, and start a branch where
interested people (not me ;-) can extend the "historical manual" without
impacting on the real automake repository.

How does that sound?
