[avr-chat] problem with AVR Doper in HVSP mode: Invalid device signature

I'm trying to program a ATTiny45 in the HVSP socket of the AVR Doper
programmer. It reads fine when connected to the ISP and the fuses are
alright. I have another fresh tiny45 to compare with - I experience the same
problem with both chips:

sudo avrdude -c stk500hvsp -P avrdoper -p t45
avrdude: AVR device initialized and ready to accept instructions
Reading | ################################################## | 100% 0.04s
avrdude: Device signature = 0xffffff
avrdude: Yikes! Invalid device signature.
Double check connections and try again, or use -F to override
         this check.
avrdude done. Thank you.

Note that the signature is always 0xffffff on my laptop, but on my desktop
it differs. although it has always many "f"s. and of course it's always
wrong.
I've tried the -B option as suggested in another post with SCK
1,10,20,50,100,150,200,220,250 - no success.
The default SCK period is 2.2 and I keep it that way.
