Maybe you heard/read by me of VMLAB. Yes, I am using it with more
success than AVRstudio. And yes, you are right, it isn't free. Right
now their offer the tool for 75€ instead of 99€ for the AVR (there
is a 21day trial available). BTW, Windows only. It also needs
objtool/elfcoff. But you can put some hardware around to your
simulation.
