Just took a look to the avr-binutils 2.15. The documentation talks about 
 "-gdwarf2" which I hope does what it looks like.

Sorry I wasn't aware of this because I only opened the mail in the 
preview and also did not verify the reply address ;-( but this time I've 
tried to manage it correctly :-).
