The bifurcations apparently make everything a power of 2.

You say "hack" like it's a bad thing.
I believe there will always be those who want to interact with Axiom through
Emacs, and so why not make it look nice?  I would think that the
IMaxima analogue would fall under the "make better tools better"
umbrella rather than the "hacks collecting dust", particularly since
IMaxima itself has been very well received.
