I don't think Makefiles in general are that very hard.  Just like one
may write very twisted spaghetti codes in higher level programming
languages, one can write hard to understand Makefiles.

I happen to find Axiom Makefiles quite non-palatable.  Part of the
problem is that similar information are not properly abstracted over
and particular information of interested are deeply hidden in a sea of
noise. Fortunately, we're working to improve thge situation.
