Depends on what the smiley looks like. I wanted to make it a
"cool dude" wearing sunglasses and sporting a smile, rather than
a grin but it would've taken a lot of time :p

I tried the four colors as a background for the yellow man and it
looks nice enough:

I also liked the circle in the background idea from Colin, though
the black and grey combination looked a bit gloomy. Things should
look lively and fun, whatsay? I filled the circle with colors and
snipped the corners off as transparency. Here's the result:
