Hm, so it could be an Emacs problem. However, I can reproduce it
neither with
GNU Emacs 23.1.50.1 (x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.16.2) of
2009-06-24 on photon
nor with
GNU Emacs 23.0.92.1 (x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.16.1) of
2009-04-20 on photon

Does it occur if you start Emacs with the following command?
emacs -Q -l auctex
--
