I'm sorry, it was a silly mistake on my side: my build environment had
run "libtoolize --copy --force" before calling ./configure, and I've
overlooked it.
That command has replaced the contents of lib/ by obsolete files.
So I suppose that the details of how the test failed are irreleant now.
(I've succeeded to install automake-1.7.2 now.)
